  • The URTA Arts Leadership Initiative

URTA is excited to announce the Arts Leadership Initiative, aimed at promoting professional training in the fields of arts management, and entrepreneurship. As part of the initiative, candidates in Theatre Management at URTA's 2016 National Unified Auditions and Interviews will pay no application fee, and be able to take advantage of free seminars and workshops.

URTA also seeks to inform undergraduates nationwide about career possibilities in producing, arts administration, and theatre management; to broaden the pool of MFA candidates in theatre management programs and supply a larger and more diverse group of trained producers and theatre managers to the professional theatre community.

"This initiative was born from a call by our member schools for a larger pool of diverse MFA candidates for their Theatre Management programs," said URTA Executive Director Scott Steele, "At the same time, URTA's national board has been considering ways in which to support the LORT (League of Resident Theatres) Diversity Initiative, aimed at increasing diversity in administrative positions across the industry. This program hopes to serve both of these needs; by broadening the pool of students, we hope to deepen it as well."

URTA President, Brant Pope added, "An increasingly important function of URTA is its ability to serve as a bridge between member programs and the theatre and entertainment industry. This Initiative is perfectly positioned to assist our members attract and train these management professionals and make them known to employers."

The Arts Leadership Initiative is sponsored by the Westin Michigan Avenue, the Chicago site of URTA's National Unified Auditions and Interviews, and a longtime supporter of URTA.

Online registration for URTA's National Unified Auditions and Interviews is taking place now.

  • Announcing the URTA "Sneak Peak"

Announcing: URTA Auditions now have a "Sneak Peek" program!

For 46 years, the URTA auditions have helped to match the best MFA candidates to the best training programs across the country and internationally. We've seen some big stars come through our process, from Ty Burrell, Kate Burton, Frances McDormand, Norbert Leo Butz, Keegan-Michael Key, Lauren Graham, Joel McHale, Kunal Nayyar, and thousands of other professionals that have built solid careers working in the arts—from acting to design to directing to theatre management. We're so proud of all the candidates that trust us with this important step in elevating their craft to the next level.

URTA is always looking for ways to nurture the next wave of theatre artists. With that in mind, we believe undergraduate acting students would really benefit from viewing the URTA process; seeing first-hand the work and preparation that goes into the MFA candidates' auditions. What better way to study audition technique than to watch a diverse selection of artists make their choices, right there in the room?

For the first time ever, URTA is opening her doors at all 3 audition sites to help you get a head start and put some of your classroom training to the test. Welcome to the Sneak Peek!

A trial run last year, with an acting class attending the URTA Auditions in San Francisco, was met with a great response.

"Thank you for the amazing opportunity to sit in on auditions this weekend. Not only did it help to clarify and prepare those students for next year, but it honed their sense of judgement. They spent hours afterwards, critiquing the good and weak points of the material presented, as well as the attitude and energy of the candidates."

If you or your school would be interested in taking part in the Sneak Peak program for 2016, please email Christy Ming-Trent at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Space is very limited, as the Sneak Peek is meant only to give students a short window of time to view the auditions.

We will continue to offer the best service to our applicants and recruiters while developing this vital outreach to younger artists hungry for industry know-how.
